PDC New Zealand Darts Championship

ROB SZABO has won the Clubs New Zealand Darts Association National Championship to be the first qualifier for the 2014 Ladbrokes World Darts Championship.

Szabo followed up his victory in May's DPNZ Capital Open by winning through the field at the Clubs New Zealand National Championship on Sunday.

The 16-player event saw the 12 Puma Open winners joined by four players from the Puma Open rankings to play off at Upper Hutt in Wellington.

Szabo topped his group in the morning rounds of the event, which saw players split into four four-player pools - with Szabo defeating Neville Herbert, New Zealand World Cup ace Craig Caldwell and John Aitken.

In the second group stage, he defeated Jonathan Silcock, Steve Gooch and Mike Day to top another group and progress to the semi-finals.

There, he overcame Craig Pullen 2-0 in sets before edging out Day 3-2 in the final, with Day having seen off another World Cup representative, Warren Parry, in the last four.

Szabo will now progress to compete in the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in December, where he will enter at the preliminary round stage.
