PDC Qualifiers for Grand Slam

JUSTIN PIPE, Peter Wright, Vincent van der Voort and Stuart Kellett were the four players to come through Monday’s Grand Slam Wildcard Qualifier in Wigan, which saw over 180 players competing for a place in the televised stages in Wolverhampton.

The quartet complete the 32 player field for the 2013 William Hill Grand Slam of Darts which commences on Saturday at the Wolverhampton Civic and will continue for nine days until Sunday 17 November, with all the action covered live on Sky Sports HD.

World number nine, Justin Pipe confirmed his third appearance in the Grand Slam of Darts following a dominant display in Wigan. He began his run with wins for Keith Rooney, David Pallett and Nigel Heydon for the loss of just one leg.

The Taunton ace continued his good form with a 4-1 victory over Northern Ireland’s Daryl Gurney before ending Jamie Caven’s hopes of appearing at the Civic Hall for the first time with a 5-3 victory to secure his place.

Peter Wright, who competed at the inaugural Masters tournament at the weekend where he lost to Michael van Gerwen, comfortably beat Paul Barham and Jon Crossley before ending Alan Norris’ challenge with a tight 4-3 win.

The Scotsman defeated Alex Roy in another deciding leg encounter before beating Yorkshire’s James Wilson 5-3 to secure a spot in the Grand Slam of Darts for the first time and continue his excellent year.

Former UK Open finalist Vincent van der Voort, will be playing in Wolverhampton for the sixth time after coming through Monday’s Wildcard Qualifier after suffering a dip in form over the last year.

Van der Voort, who missed out last year, defeated Sunday’s Players Championship winner Brendan Dolan 4-3, before overcoming Martyn Turner by a 5-2 scoreline in the final round.

Stuart Kellett started his run to qualification with wins over Nathan Richards, Peter Hudson and Ricky Sudale before overcoming 1996 World Champion Steve Beaton with an excellent 4-1 triumph.

The 32-year-old then edged out youngster Ben Ward 4-3 before confirming a debut appearance in Wolverhampton thanks to a 5-3 triumph over Bristol’s Steve Brown.

Former World Champion Richie Burnett lost in the second round to Josh Payne while another World Champion Jelle Klaasen lost 4-1 Mark Dudbridge in the same round.

Kevin McDine, who produced a fabulous run to the semi-finals of the inaugural event in 2007, lost a deciding-leg to Steve Brown in third round, while 2008 finalist Terry Jenkins fell at the same stage to Michael Barnard, who defeated the Ledbury ace 4-3.

Early high profile casualties included three-time World Champion John Part along with two-time major winner Colin Lloyd. Top 20 star Ronnie Baxter, was another big name to fall in the opening round.
