PDC Uk Open Qualifiers- Day 2

STEPHEN BUNTING defeated Andrew Gilding in a dramatic deciding leg final of the second Coral UK Open Qualifier to claim his first PDC Pro Tour title in just his second event, at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan, on Saturday.
The £10,000 winners prize for victory on Saturday sees Bunting guarantee his place at the televised finals of the UK Open in March along, with other PDC televised events in 2014, as well as seeing him rise up inside the top 80 of the PDC Order of Merit after just two events played.

Following defeat to Michael van Gerwen in his PDC debut 24 hours earlier, the Lakeside champion secured wins over Dick van Dijk, Alan Derrett and former major finalist Wayne Jones to reach the last 32 stage.

The Liverpool ace then claimed a brace of 6-4 wins over John Bowles and one of yesterday’s nine-dart hero’s Terry Jenkins, to move into the last eight where he overcame Paul Nicholson by a 6-2 margin.

Bunting repeated the trick in the last four as he beat 1996 World Champion Steve Beaton 6-2 to claim his place in the final where he faced Gilding.

Both players showed nerves in the early stages of their first PDC Pro Tour final but Bunting managed to come away with a 2-1 advantage before Gilding drew level with a 76 finish in the fourth leg.

Gilding edged ahead by taking the fifth leg before Bunting replied by hitting double ten only for his opponent to win the seventh leg on double six for a 4-3 lead.

Bunting raised hopes briefly of a nine-darter, after starting the eighth with scores of 180 and 177. It wasn’t to be, though the leg was on double 16 before converting a brilliant 130 checkout on the bullseye to lead 5-4.

Gilding showed great nerve to hit a 76 finish to force a deciding leg but Bunting produced his best form of the game at its conclusion as he fired in a 180 before winning the £10,000 first prize with a fabulous 161 checkout.

Gilding enjoyed the best day of his darting career to date as the 43-year-old claimed the notable scalps of Raymond van Barneveld, James Wade and 2006 Lakeside champion Jelle Klaasen to reach the quarter-finals.

There, he ended the hopes of the talented Northern Irishman Daryl Gurney with a 6-4 win to reach the last four for the second time, after reaching the same stage in Ireland, last October.

Gilding faced the daunting task of playing 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor in the semi’s but defied a 104 average from his illustrious opponent to reach his first Pro Tour Final with a fantastic 6-4 win.

The Suffolk’s thrower’s hopes a of claiming the £10,000 winners prize were raised when led Bunting 4-3 in the decider, before eventually falling to a 6-5 defeat to the Liverpool star.

Phil Taylor produced a much improved display in Wigan on Saturday, following his whitewash defeat to Michael van Gerwen in the opening night of the 2014 Premier League Darts, and a first game defeat to Keegan Brown, in Friday’s Coral UK Open Qualifier.

After a tough 6-4 win in his first game against Joe Cullen, the world number two enjoyed easier progress with a 6-0 thrashing of Darren Johnson before confidence boosting wins over Peter Wright and Mervyn King secured his place in the last eight.

At that stage he defeated Justin Pipe by a 6-3 margin with the aid of a 101 average before falling to a surprise semi-final loss to Gilding, but took away £2,500 for his efforts, securing his qualification for Minehead next month.

Taylor was joined in the semi-finals by Steve Beaton who backed up his quarter-final showing 24 hours earlier with a fine run to semi-finals on Saturday, where he was denied a place in the final by Bunting.

Daryl Gurney reached his second Pro Tour quarter-final thanks to a dramatic 6-5 win where he hit a 146 checkout to knock out World Champion Michael van Gerwen before being edged out a by 6-4 margin to Gilding in the last eight.

Premier League stars Raymond van Barneveld and Gary Anderson suffered shock first games defeats along with Friday’s Coral UK Open Qualifier winner Andy Hamilton, who was brought back down to earth by a 6-3 loss to Dean Winstanley.

The triple header of Coral UK Open Qualifiers concludes on Sunday at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan, where the third qualifier will take place with £50,000 on offer.

PDC UK Open Qualifier 1- Results

ANDY HAMILTON won his first title on the PDC Pro Tour since 2007 after a 6-2 victory over his Stoke compatriot Adrian Lewis in the first Coral UK Open Qualifier on Friday.
The three-time major finalist produced a fine display of darts in Wigan, which saw an incredible three nine-darters recorded on a dramatic day at the Robin Park Tennis Centre.

The world number 11 started his run to victory with a win over Michael Burgoine before edging out Jeff Batham by a 6-5 scoreline.

Hamilton then recorded fantastic wins over a trio of major championship winners in the shape of James Wade, Michael van Gerwen and Kevin Painter before dismissing Dave Chisnall 6-1 to seal his place in the final.

In the decider the 46-year-old faced world number four Adrian Lewis and he enjoyed the better start by taking the opening two legs of the game.

The next two legs were shared before the two-time World Champion held throw on double 16 to win the fifth leg and keep in the hunt.

Hamilton though, won the sixth leg to move 4-2 up after Lewis wasted opportunities to level the contest before hitting a brilliant 144 checkout to go a leg away from victory.

That left Lewis trailing by three legs and he had no answer to his opponent who took out a 96 finish on double 18, to end the match with a 105.27 average to win the £10,000 first prize in style.

Lewis continued his fine form of 24 hours earlier where he destroyed Simon Whitlock in his opening Premier League contest, starting the day with wins over Matt Padgett and Adam Hunt before surviving a Robert Thornton comeback to defeat the Scotsman 6-5, having led 5-2.

The 29-year-old dismissed Ronnie Baxter and Justin Pipe before a 6-5 win over Peter Wright secured his place in the final, overturning a 4-2 deficit.

Lewis was unable to match a strong performance from Hamilton in the decider, but secured his place in the televised finals in March, at the Butlins Minehead Resort, after claiming the £5,000 runners-up prize.

Dave Chisnall and Peter Wright enjoyed fine runs to the last four, collecting £2,500 in the process following their fantastic Premier League debut wins at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, on Thursday evening.

Chisnall’s big highlight on route to the semi-finals was a nine-dart finish to close out his last 32 contest against Keegan Brown. It was the third of the day following Terry Jenkins and David Ladley’s fantastic efforts in their second round games.

World Champion Michael van Gerwen fell victim to eventual winner Andy Hamilton by a 6-4 scoreline at the last 16 stage, while 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor lost his opening game to Keegan Brown, continuing his tough start to 2014.

Lakeside Champion Stephen Bunting made his eagerly awaited PDC debut on in Wigan. He defeated Jake Patchett 6-4 in his opening match, which featured a 151 checkout, before losing 6-3 to van Gerwen in the next round.

The second part of the triple header weekend in Wigan will take place on Saturday, where the second Coral UK Open Qualifier will be contested with £50,000 prize money on offer once again.

The leading 96 players plus ties, from the UK Open Order of Merit, following the six Qualifiers will progress to compete in the Coral UK Open televised finals from March 7-9 in Minehead, where they will be joined by a series of amateur qualifiers.

PDC Premier League- Week 1 Liverpool

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN kicked off the Betway Premier League Darts season with a stunning whitewash of Phil Taylor at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Thursday, as brilliant duo Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis and debutants Dave Chisnall and Peter Wright opened with victories.
Reigning Premier League Darts champion van Gerwen left the six-time winner stunned as he averaged 109.59 in a flawless performance during a repeat of last year's final.

Taylor, returning to competitive action for the first time since his second round exit at the World Championship exit in December, had only four darts at a double during the 13-minute contest as he suffered his heaviest-ever Premier League Darts defeat.

Van Gerwen showed his intentions by breaking throw with a 13-darter in the game's opening leg, and finished 121 on the bull to double his lead before another 13-darter moved him three legs clear.

Taylor hit three 140s in the fourth leg, but missed two darts at double 12 as the Dutchman finished a 14-darter before pinning a 12-dart leg for a 5-0 cushion.

Taylor, using a new design of dart in competition for the first time, landed a 180 in the sixth leg but was left waiting on a finish as tops put van Gerwen 6-0 up, before the new World Champion posted a 180 in a 15-dart leg as he wrapped up an incredible win.

The night also saw another brilliant performance from the Premier League's other Dutch star, as Raymond van Barneveld averaged 108.52 in a superb 7-2 win over 2011 Premier League Darts champion Gary Anderson.

The five-time World Champion opened the game with a 13-darter and added two 11-dart legs as he moved 3-0 up, with Anderson replying on tops only for the Dutchman to hit a third 11-dart finish of the game in another burst as he moved 6-1 up.

Anderson - last weekend's German Darts Championship winner - traded 180s with his rival as double top kept him in the game, but he missed the bullseye for a 126 checkout in the next as van Barneveld sealed a huge victory.

Two-time World Champion Adrian Lewis was another heavy winner on the opening night, bringing the Echo Arena crowd to their feet with a 7-1 romp against another former Premier League Darts finalist, Simon Whitlock.

Lewis raced into a four-leg lead with some superb finishing on double top and ten, took out 61 on double four to win a fifth leg and then posted a 130 finish to lead 6-0.

Whitlock finished 61 to reply as he got avoided a whitewash, but two missed doubles in the next allowed Lewis to complete a heavy win, ending with a 99.13 average and seven doubles from 11 attempts.

Debutants Dave Chisnall and Peter Wright also enjoyed victories as they opened their Premier League Darts campaigns with defeats of Robert Thornton and Wes Newton respectively.

Chisnall punished missed doubles from Thornton as he won two of the opening three legs, and though the Scot edged into a 3-2 lead, the world number five hit back to regain the edge before breaking throw in the game's final leg to claim victory.

World Championship finalist Wright, meanwhile, was a 7-3 winner against world number eight Newton, who never recovered from falling 3-0 and 4-1 down early on.

Newton pulled back to 4-3 only to miss two darts at double six to level the game, and Wright raced clear to punish further wayward finishing by securing the points.

The Betway Premier League Darts season continues next Thursday at the BIC in Bournemouth, with the five games on the night including the all-Stoke contest between Taylor and Lewis.

The week also sees van Barneveld face Newton as he returns to the venue of his famous nine-darter in 2006, while van Gerwen plays Thornton, Whitlock plays Anderson and the two newcomers, Wright and Chisnall, also clash.
