PDC German Darts Championship- Day 2

The world number two needed less than 13 minutes to see off Osborne as he progressed to Sunday's final stages of the European Tour event, which will see the third round held in the afternoon session and the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final in the evening.

Hot on the heels of Friday's first round win over Terry Temple, van Gerwen continued his bid for a third European Tour win of the year in ruthless fashion against the former UK Open finalist.

Van Gerwen hit three 180s and a 116 finish as he took the opening four legs without reply, and took out 96 to win a fifth leg before landing two more maximums in an 11-darter to complete a comprehensive win.

Van Gerwen now meets Andy Hamilton in Sunday afternoon's third round, after the UK Open finalist knocked out local hero Jyhan Artut 6-1, with the qualifier from Hannover taking out a 146 finish to win his only leg of the game as he was eliminated.

Number two seed Simon Whitlock also dropped just one leg in his victory over Mark Dudbridge, and the Australian now meets Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney in the last 16.

Gurney, appearing in his first European Tour event, followed up Friday's win over Colin Lloyd with a 6-3 defeat of Ronnie Baxter in his second round game as he moved into Sunday's final stages.

World number eight Justin Pipe was also in fine form as he overcame Dennis Smith 6-1, and he now takes on Kevin Painter after the former Players Championship Finals winner saw off Wes Newton 6-4.

Dave Chisnall came through a dramatic 11-leg clash with Arron Monk as he moved into the last 16, with the former World Youth Champion taking a 5-3 lead at one stage and missing one match dart in the deciding leg as the world number nine progressed.

Chisnall now meets Paul Nicholson, who impressed with a 6-2 victory over Matthew Edgar in the second round, landing an 11-dart finish and a brace of 13-darters.

The top half of the draw for the third round is completed by the clash between Andy Smith and Steve Beaton, following their victories over Darren Webster and Mervyn King respectively.

Smith had few issues as he took a 6-1 win over Webster, but Beaton almost paid the price for failing to close out victory against King when 5-3 up, with the Norfolk ace hitting back to force a decider only to miss three match darts at double ten to allow the former World Champion back in to edge the win.

UK Open semi-finalist Peter Wright also knocked out local opposition as he saw off plucky qualifier Michael Hurtz 6-3, although the Hannover ace had led 3-2 as the pair shared a tight first half of the contest.

Wright now meets Jelle Klaasen, who claimed a 6-3 win over Terry Jenkins in their second round game.

Steve Brown impressed with a 6-2 win over Ian White, who led 2-0 early on but could not stop his opponent taking the next six legs without reply, and the Bristol ace now plays Richie Burnett, who came from 5-3 down to punish Robert Thornton for a string of missed match darts as he crept through.

Jamie Caven's 6-3 win over German teenager Max Hopp has earned him a clash with Dutch ace Vincent van der Voort, who followed up Friday's win over Adrian Lewis with a 6-2 defeat of Brendan Dolan.

The £100,000 event will conclude on Sunday, with the third round games in the afternoon session before the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final are held in the evening session.

Match Information

Jelle Klaasen
moved through to the last 16 with a 6-3 win over Terry Jenkins in the day's opening game. The Dutch ace edged the opening leg with a 98 finish and landed a 180 before double two moved him two legs up. The pair traded 180s in the next as Jenkins took out double five to hit back, but Klaasen landed two more maximums as he took a 4-1 lead. Jenkins finished double ten in two successive legs as he closed the gap to 4-3, but Klaasen took out a superb 146 checkout to win leg eight and landed double 14 in the next to seal victory, despite another 180 from Jenkins.

Andy Smith raced into the third round of the German Darts Championship with a 6-1 win over Darren Webster. After Smith took the opener on double 16, Webster levelled with the aid of a 180 in leg two, but was punished for missed doubles in the next three as Smith, aided by two double ten finishes and tops, moved 4-1 up. Smith posted two 140s as he took the sixth, despite another maximum from Webster, and the Studley ace landed a 180 of his own in the seventh leg before sealing the win on double 16.

Jamie Caven overcame a spirited performance from German teenager Max Hopp as he progressed with a 6-3 victory. Hopp opened the game with a 180, but Caven replied with a maximum of his own before finishing 98 to take the opening leg in 12 darts, before the German edged the next two with double top and double six. Caven levelled through a 66 finish and then took out a 14-darter on double 12, finishing 84, to move 3-2 up. Hopp - to the delight of the capacity crowd - levelled on double 16 in the next, but tops saw Caven regain the advantage with a 14-darter, before he broke on double four and hit double ten in the next to seal his third round spot.

Steve Beaton grasped victory from the jaws of defeat against Mervyn King as he moved into a third round clash with Andy Smith. Beaton edged the opening leg on double two after the pair both posted maximums, and though King levelled on double 16, he finished 88 on double 14 for an 11-darter before taking out a superb 141 checkout to lead 3-1. King took two of the next three, but a 14-darter from Beaton helped him maintain a 4-3 cushion before he added another 14-dart finish, setting up double 16 with a 174 score, as he led 5-3. Despite landing a third 180 in the ninth leg, Beaton was punished for missing his chance to claim the win as King posted double ten to stay in the game and double 16 for a 15-dart finish as he sent the contest into a decider. Beaton was initially first to a finish but missed tops for a 102 checkout, only for King to miss three darts at double ten to complete his comeback which allowed the former World Champion back to land tops at the third time of asking to seal a third round spot.

Steve Brown took six successive legs as he defeated Ian White 6-2 to move into the third round of the German Darts Championship. The pair shared eight 180s in the game's opening five legs, with both landing maximums in the opener as White finished double 16 to lead before landing two 180s in a brilliant ten-darter as he moved 2-0 up. Brown replied on double 16 and then levelled the match with a superb 11-darter which featured a pair of maximums of his own, before adding another 180 and double four to break throw and move 3-2 up. He took out 66 to win a fourth straight leg, double 18 to punish misses from White in the next and finished double 16 to complete a fine display.

Daryl Gurney continued his impressive European Tour debut as he defeated Ronnie Baxter 6-3 to move into the third round in Hildesheim. The Northern Irish ace took an early 3-0 lead courtesy of double 16, double 18 and tops before Baxter, aided by 180s in the next two legs, hit finishes of 14 and 13 darts as he got himself back into the game. Gurney took out 72 to move 4-2 up, and though Baxter finished double eight for a 14-darter to again respond, the youngster took out double nine for a 5-3 lead before hitting a 180 and double eight to complete the win.

Dave Chisnall claimed a second successive 6-5 victory as he came from 5-3 down to overcome Arron Monk. Monk took out 130 on the bull to win the game's opening leg, before Chisnall levelled on tops and then broke in leg three, hitting a 177 to leave 36, which he finished on double nine for a 14-darter. Monk finished double five to level and was left waiting on 40 in the fifth as Chisnall took out a brilliant 170 checkout to move 3-2 up. However, he was punished for failing to clean up in the next as Monk finished 51 to level and then hit double ten to move 4-3 up. Double six put the former World Youth Champion a leg away from victory, but Chisnall replied superbly with legs of 13 and 14 darts to level and force a decider, which he opened with a 180. Monk was first to a double, but missed double 14 for a 107 finish, and Chisnall pounced to complete a 14-darter on tops to move into the last 16.

Paul Nicholson set up a tasty German Darts Championship third round clash with Dave Chisnall courtesy of an impressive 6-2 win over Matthew Edgar to complete Saturday's afternoon session. The Sydney Darts Masters quarter-finalist found himself a leg down when Edgar opened the game with a 98 finish, but landed a pair of 13-darters to put himself into a lead he would never lose. Nicholson added a brace of double four finishes as he took a 4-1 advantage, before Edgar hit back in leg six by landing double 16 at the first time of asking. Nicholson, though, regained his cushion with a superb 11-dart leg, scoring 180, 140 and 165 before hitting double four for a 5-2 lead before finishing 100 to seal progression.

Simon Whitlock powered into the German Darts Championship third round with a 6-1 win over Mark Dudbridge in Saturday evening's opening game. Whitlock stormed out of the blocks, winning the opening leg in 13 darts on double eight, despite a 180 from the Bristol ace, and doubling his lead by hitting the same bed in leg two. Double ten gave the Australian leg three before he landed tops to complete a 14-darter for a 4-0 lead, and double ten saw him move to the brink of a whitewash win. Dudbridge posted double eight himself to get off the mark in leg six, but missed the bull for a 170 checkout in the next as Whitlock stepped in to follow an earlier 180 with double five for victory.

Kevin Painter booked his third round place at the German Darts Championship with a 6-4 defeat of Wes Newton. Painter opened the game with two 140s and took the opening leg on tops before Newton, aided by a 180, levelled with a 13-darter. Painter edged the third and then broke in the fourth, despite a 180 from Newton, with a 14-dart leg to move 3-1 up. Newton broke back, landing two 140s and a 171 in a 13-dart leg before squaring the game with a 14-dart finish which featured another maximum. Painter, though, replied with a 180 as he edged back ahead, only for Newton to reply in kind with another 14-darter which featured a maximum. Painter matched that with a 14-dart leg to move 5-4 up, and repeated the feat to break throw and seal victory on tops.

Justin Pipe dropped only one leg in his clash with Dennis Smith as he moved through to a third round clash with Kevin Painter at the German Darts Championship. Pipe took the opening leg with a 76 finish for a 15-darter, and doubled his lead by breaking throw on double two. He landed double nine to win the third leg and posted a 180 in the fourth as he moved 4-0 up on double 16, before Smith, despite another maximum from his opponent, broke on double ten in the fifth to get off the mark. Pipe though, opened the sixth with a third 180 in as many legs before taking out 76 again to break and lead 5-1, and though he missed the bull for a 170 finish in the next leg, the Taunton ace returned to land double eight to secure progression.

Michael van Gerwen produced the best performance of the German Darts Championship weekend so far with a stunning 6-0 whitewash of Colin Osborne, ending with a 109.98 average. The Dutch ace showed no mercy in the 13-minute romp, opening with a 180 as he took the first leg on double four before landing double 16 to break in leg two. He added another 180 and a 116 finish in a 12-darter to win the third leg, and hit a third maximum of the contest in the fourth. A 96 finish put him five legs clear, and he went on to seal victory with a brilliant 11-darter, landing two 180s and ending on double 16.

Peter Wright overcame plucky German qualifier Michael Hurtz 6-3 as he set up a German Darts Championship third round clash with Jelle Klaasen in Hildesheim. European Tour debutant Hurtz gave as good as he got with the UK Open semi-finalist in the early stages, sharing the opening six legs. He held throw in the opener before Wright hit a 180 as he levelled, and the German landed two 140s as he edged the third on double five. Wright traded 180s with the home favourite as he levelled with a 14-darter, only for Hurtz to finish 56 to move 3-2 up. Despite a 180 from Hurtz, Wright levelled in the sixth with another 14-darter, before taking out 91 for the game's first break of throw in the seventh, as the German missed his chance to regain the lead. Wright then opened leg eight with 140 and 18 as double ten put him 5-3 up, and he added a fourth 180 of the game as he sealed victory with a 13-dart finish.

Andy Hamilton set up a third round clash with top seed Michael van Gerwen at the German Darts Championship with a 6-1 win over Jyhan Artut, the local favourite who was unable to progress beyond the last 32. Hamilton finished 56 on tops in each of the first two legs before edging the third on double five. The UK Open finalist also took out tops in the next two as he moved 5-0 up before Artut saved the game with a brilliant 146 checkout. His fightback, though, was short-lived as Hamilton opened leg seven with a 180 and finished double four to secure the win.

Vincent van der Voort followed up Friday's win over Adrian Lewis by knocking out another of the world's top 16, Brendan Dolan, as he reached the last 16 in Hildesheim. The Dutch ace broke with a 14-darter in the opening leg, finishing 100, and doubled his lead on double 14 in the second before Dolan, aided by a 180, hit a 12-darter to get off the mark. The pair traded the next two legs before van der Voort edged a key sixth to move 4-2 up, and he hit 180s in the next two legs as he moved into the third round for the first time in a European Tour event for 12 months.

Richie Burnett crept past Robert Thornton with a 6-5 victory as he edged a dramatic deciding leg with the Scot in Hildesheim. Burnett took a 2-0 lead as he finished 120 in the opening leg, to break throw, and double four in the second. Thornton got off the mark with a brilliant 11-dart leg, which included a 180, and posted double 18 to break in the fourth and level. Burnett posted a 13-dart finish to move 3-2 up, but Thornton levelled on tops and then took out double ten to move ahead for the first time at 4-3. The Scot then finished 121 on the bull for a 5-3 cushion, but was unable to close out victory in the next as Burnett posted double 16 and then finished a 14-darter - as the pair traded 180s - to sent the game into a decider. Thornton also added a maximum in the final leg, but missed his chance to claim victory once again and Burnett made him pay by landing double ten to complete the comeback.
