The Grand Slam- Day 2

SCOTT WAITES became the first player to win through to the William Hill Grand Slam of Darts second round with a fine victory over Michael Smith on Sunday afternoon, and was later joined in progressing to the last 16 by Phil Taylor, James Wade and Ronny Huybrechts in Wolverhampton.
Yorkshireman Waites, the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts champion, followed up Saturday's opening win over Hankey with another brilliant performance as he ensured passage from Group H in the event.

Waites, the reigning Lakeside Champion, overcame emerging star Michael Smith 5-2 in their second round-robin contest, leaving the PDC Unicorn World Youth Champion now facing an all-or-nothing clash with Hankey on Monday to decide who joins him in the last 16.

Chisnall, though, was eliminated as Hankey produced a fine display to come from 3-1 down to claim a fine 5-3 triumph from their contest.

Chisnall took the first two legs and also hit an 11-darter, but Hankey hit back to level before taking out a 170 checkout, and then landed a 177 in the eighth leg as the two-time Lakeside Champion went on to complete the win with a fourth successive leg.

Reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld picked up his second successive Group E victory, edging out Tony O'Shea 5-4 in a nine-leg thriller.

After trailing 2-0 early on, Stockport's O'Shea hit back to lead 3-2, but saw van Barneveld level as the pair headed to a deciding leg, which the Dutchman won with a 72 finish.

Mervyn King's high-quality 5-2 win over Ricky Evans in the day's other Group E game means that there is still all to play for going into Monday's final matches.

Van Barneveld would qualify with a win over King, with O'Shea and Evans also still able to win through to the knockout stage of the event in the final set of games.

Australian star Simon Whitlock won his second match in Group G in impressive style, averaging 108.78 in a 5-1 victory against Mark Webster, hitting four 180s and missing only one dart at a double.

He is now in pole position ahead of Monday's final game with Wes Newton, who was a 5-2 winner against Ross Smith earlier on Sunday afternoon as he joined Webster on two points.

Robert Thornton maintained his 100 percent record as he followed up Saturday's whitewash of Mark Walsh with a 5-2 win over Justin Pipe, taking out a key 152 checkout in the victory.

Walsh's 5-1 defeat to Andy Hamilton saw the Stoke star kick-start his challenge in Group F ahead of his key clash with Thornton on Monday night.

Sunday's evening session saw Taylor, Wade and Ronny Huybrechts secure qualification for the second round with victories in their second group matches.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Taylor followed up Saturday's opening whitewash of Stuart Kellett by dropping only one leg in a brilliant 5-1 defeat of Paul Nicholson 24 hours later.

The result means that Taylor - who averaged 104.51 in Sunday's win - will now qualify from Group A at the Wolves Civic, as he continues his bid to win a seventh major televised title of 2013.

Nicholson now faces a crucial battle on Tuesday night with Kellett which will see the winner progress alongside Taylor to the knockout stages, after the Cheshire ace defeated Painter 5-4 in his second game.

Painter led 4-2 at one stage, but was punished for missing two match darts in the seventh leg as the debutant hit back to level before winning the decider in 14 darts.

2010 Grand Slam of Darts finalist Wade continued his strong start to this year's event as he followed up his opening win over Peter Wright with a clinical 5-3 defeat of Gary Anderson to seal
his last 16 spot, which included finishes of 120 and 110.

Anderson will now take on Wright for a place in the last 16, with the UK Open semi-finalist having earlier won 5-2 in his clash with Dutchman Wesley Harms, who cannot qualify after suffering a second successive defeat.

Belgian ace Ronny Huybrechts continued his dream debut in Wolverhampton by picking up a superb 5-3 comeback win over Adrian Lewis, a result which followed his triumph over former Lakeside Champion Christian Kist 24 hours earlier.

Lewis looked set to storm to a second successive win when he established a 3-1 cushion at an average of 110, but the newcomer hit an 11-darter to reply, punished three misses at tops from the Stoke ace to level before winning the next two legs to secure passage into the second round.

Lewis now takes on Kist to decide who joins the older Huybrechts brother in qualifying from Group C, after the Dutchman picked up a 5-2 win over another new face, Richie George, in their second game of the event.

There is, though, still plenty to play for in Group D after Michael van Gerwen won his second successive game by sweeping past Dean Winstanley 5-1 and Kim Huybrechts whitewashed Vincent van der Voort.

Huybrechts and van Gerwen now meet on Tuesday night, while Winstanley faces van der Voort in the group's other final match on a night in which both results could affect the qualifiers.

Monday night seeds Groups E-H play their final round-robin games, with only Scott Waites definitely assured of progression to the knockout stage, while Ted Hankey and Michael Smith face a key battle in which the winner joins the 2010 champion in qualifying.

Reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld is joined by Robert Thornton and Simon Whitlock on four points but not yet safe as they go into games with Mervyn King, Andy Hamilton and Wes Newton respectively.

Grand Slam- Day 1

PHIL TAYLOR turned on the style as he kicked off his bid to win a fifth William Hill Grand Slam of Darts title with a whitewash of Stuart Kellett on Friday night, as Michael van Gerwen won the all-Dutch battle with Vincent van der Voort and reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld enjoyed a strong start to his title defence.
Four-time Wolves Civic champion Taylor was at his unstoppable best as he picked up a sensational first win of the round-robin phase, averaging 112.16 - a record for the event's group stage - and allowing Kellett just one dart at a double in the game.

Taylor took out finishes of 108 and 100 as he established a 3-0 lead, finishing an 11-darter in the process before adding legs of 14 and 12 darts to complete a brilliant performance.

Taylor, who now meets Paul Nicholson in Sunday night's second Group A game, had won The Masters in Edinburgh last weekend, and was delighted to take his imperious form to the Wolverhampton Civic Hall stage.

Nicholson kicked off his challenge in the tournament with a 5-2 win against Kevin Painter, completing victory in the battle of former Players Championship Finals winners with a 125 checkout.

2012 Grand Slam of Darts runner-up Michael van Gerwen bounced back to winning ways on the Wolverhampton stage with a 5-3 win over Vincent van der Voort, as the pair put aside their close friendship in a quick-fire contest.

Van der Voort led 2-1 as the Premier League Darts champion was punished for early missed doubles, before van Gerwen regained his range to win four of the final five legs to take victory.

Van Gerwen will face Dean Winstanley in their second Group D game, after the 2012 semi-finalist produced some brilliant darts to defeat in-form Kim Huybrechts 5-2.

Two-time World Champion Adrian Lewis came from 2-1 down to win 5-2 against Richie George, the Lakeside Championship semi-finalist and son of Bobby George who was making his debut in the event.

Lewis' opponent in their second Group C contest will be Ronny Huybrechts, who enjoyed a 5-3 win over former Lakeside Champion Christian Kist.

Gary Anderson stormed to 5-1 win over Wesley Harms in their Group B opener, averaging 107.14 in a fine display which saw him win the first four legs without reply and also have darts to claim a whitewash, before hitting a 13-darter to deny the Dutchman a comeback.

Anderson now plays 2010 Grand Slam of Darts runner-up Wade, who opened his clash with Wright with checkouts of 130 and 160 before completing a superb 5-2 win over the debutant.

In Saturday's afternoon session, Raymond van Barneveld began the defence of his Grand Slam of Darts title with a fine 5-2 win over Ricky Evans, while rivals Simon Whitlock, Robert Thornton and Scott Waites all picked up victories.

Dutch star van Barneveld had ended a five-year wait for a major individual title when he overcame Michael van Gerwen 16-14 in last year's final of the cross-code event.

He continued his winning run on the Wolves Civic stage with a confident 5-2 victory over World Youth Championship finalist Ricky Evans in their Group E contest to kick off their challenge this time around.

Van Barneveld now plays Tony O'Shea in their second Group E game on Sunday, after the Lakeside Championship finalist edged a thriller with Mervyn King 5-4, as the Norfolk ace came back from 4-1 down to force a decider.

2010 Grand Slam of Darts winner Scott Waites, the reigning Lakeside Champion, made a winning start to his challenge in Group H with a 5-3 defeat of Ted Hankey.

Waites' second group game will now see him face World Youth Champion Michael Smith, who impressed with a 103 average in his 5-3 defeat of Dave Chisnall, who led 3-1 before the youngster hit legs of 11, 12, 14 and 13 darts to storm to victory.

Former Lakeside Champion Mark Webster opened his challenge with a confidence boosting 5-2 win over Wes Newton, who led 2-0 early on only to see the Welsh ace, aided by a brilliant 164 checkout, to reel off five successive legs.

Webster will now take on Simon Whitlock in their second Group G game, with the Australian having been a 5-2 winner against Ross Smith, the Challenge Tour Order of Merit winner making his Wolverhampton debut.

Former UK Open champion Robert Thornton kicked off the tournament with a superb whitewash of former semi-finalist Mark Walsh, hitting finishes of 126 and 140 in a fine display.

Thornton's second Group F opponent will be Justin Pipe, who celebrated his 42nd birthday with a 5-2 defeat of Andy Hamilton.

Sunday's play sees the second group matches split across two sessions at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall, with Groups E-H competing in the afternoon before Groups A-D play in the evening.

PDC Ricky Evans is Ready for the Slam

RICKY EVANS is hoping to upset the odds when he makes his William Hill Grand Slam of Darts debut this weekend.

The Kettering youngster won his spot in the Wolves Civic tournament by reaching the final of the PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship earlier this year.

The 23-year-old has been drawn in Group E for the tournament, meaning that he opens his challenge in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Saturday against reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld, before then playing Mervyn King and Tony O'Shea in the round-robin phase.

But, having reached his first senior final on the PDC ProTour at a Players Championship in Wigan last weekend, the youngster is heading to Wolverhampton with high hopes of causing an upset.

"It is a tough group but I would like to think that I am no mug now and I hope the other players feel that I help make it a tough group," Evans told the Northamptonshire Telegraph.

"I played really well in Wigan last weekend and I beat some very good players. I am feeling good and if I can get on a run then I believe I can have an impact.

"To be drawn alongside someone like Raymond is fantastic and I am sure his fans will be there in full voice, but I am not going to let that bother me."

Young Seals NACT Glory

DARIN YOUNG has won through an eighth appearance in the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship, after topping the PDC North American Championship Tour rankings by sharing wins with Chris White on the final double-header weekend of the year.
The left-hander's consistency across the year's tournaments continued as he reached the Event Seven semi-finals in Sacramento on Saturday before winning Sunday's Event Eight, claiming his first win of 2013 but ending a strong season at the top of the Order of Merit.

Saturday's opening event of the double-header saw California-based White take victory on home soil, defeating Canadian youngster Shaun Narain in the final.

He dropped only two legs in wins over Alex Taber, Ron Colvard and Cory Tkach, before defeating Larry Butler 6-4 in the semi-finals, after the former World Matchplay champion came back from 5-0 down to trail just 5-4 at one stage.

Narain had knocked out Young 6-2 in the semi-finals, and came from 2-0 down in the final to level at two-all, hitting a 180 in getting his challenge up and running in leg three.

White landed 180s in two of the next three legs as he moved 5-2 up, and though Narain won the eighth to keep his hopes alive, White finished 40 to seal a 6-3 triumph.

Narain gained revenge with a 6-3 quarter-final win over White in Sunday's Event Eight, before he was defeated by the same scoreline by Young in a see-saw semi-final, which saw him come from 3-0 down to level before the left-hander pulled away.

Wins for Bernie Miller over Anthony Rohlfing, Nico DePaynos and Dan Olson saw him reach the semi-finals, where he defeated Cory Tkach 6-4 to reach the final.

Young took the final's opening two legs before Miller, aided by a pair of 180s, hit back to level.

After Young finished 92 for a 3-2 lead, Miller levelled and then broke to put himself ahead for the first time, but finishes of 72 and 76 from the left-hander moved him 5-4 up before he broke throw once more to seal the win.

The victory means that Young, as the PDC North American Championship Tour winner, progresses to compete in the first round of the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in December as one of the event's International Qualifiers.
